Chapter 9

Anthony lay on the couch with his head on his mate’s lap. Magic thrummed through him, a low-level itch that shifted across his skin as if seeking points of exit to escape.

“Are you all right?” Silver ran a soothing hand across his hair.

“No, I feel unsettled.” If asked how being a god would feel, Anthony had no pre-existing ideas. He hadn’t thought to ask Zeus, and even if he had, he doubted his grandfather would have been able to answer. It would be like asking a human what it was like to be human. If you had never been anything else, how would you know to explain certain things?

“Is it your magic?” Silver asked.

Anthony tried not to snap at his mate’s constant questioning. After all they’d gone through over the past few years, Anthony could honestly claim to have the most understanding partner ever born.

He tried to focus internally to find the source of his unease but couldn’t pin it down. “I don’t know. I’m just jittery.”

“Maybe having too much power is wrecking your system? Why don’t we go someplace secluded where you can burn off some energy?” Silver proposed.

Anthony rolled the idea around in his mind. If they burned off energy the way he preferred, by having sex with Silver, he’d probably electrocute his mate. “That’s a good idea.”

He sat up in time to catch the relief on Silver’s face.

“I didn’t want to hurt your feelings, but you’ve been putting off electric currents and my wolf is on edge.” Silver’s apologetic smile twisted Anthony up inside.

He cupped Silver’s cheek, careful to keep his magic contained. “If you are ever worried about my magic or anything, talk to me. I won’t have secrets or fears between us. It would break my heart if you were scared of me.”

Anthony hadn’t realized how tense Silver had become until he saw the stress pour out of him like a deflating balloon. “I love you, Anthony. I admit you came with a few more complications than I ever expected, but I wouldn’t trade our time together for anything. You are my heart, my soul, and the other half of my being. Wolves bond for life, and my life is yours.”

“If I had less energy, I’d let you take me on the couch,” Anthony blurted out.

“You’re such a romantic.” Silver snorted as he pushed Anthony to his feet. “Let’s find a nice secluded spot for you to break out your powers. Best get some control before you have to use them for real.”

Anthony lost his smile. He had forgotten the reason behind getting his godhead early. There were real threats out there, and at this point, the mutants were one of the smaller ones. He had to learn how to control his magic in order to protect his family. No one would harm those he loved as long as he could stand between them and danger.

“Easy, love, we don’t want you shooting lightning out of your eyeballs.” Silver wrapped an arm around Anthony’s shoulder and led him out of their condo.
